When your friend or partner is sad or angry,
those feelings belong to him or her.
You may have triggered the feelings,
but you are not their ultimate cause,
nor are you responsible for changing
how the other person feels.
Because you don’t buy into inappropriate guilt,
you remain emotionally free to respond
to the other person in a loving way.
